On the latest episode of The Solid Verbal podcast, we dive into the growing perception that too many dramatic changes to the sport, including the transfer portal, an expanding College Football Playoff, and constant realignment, especially within the Big Ten and SEC, is quickly killing off much of what longtime college football fans love about the sport. FYI Ft Worth is basically a large suburb that has inferior versions of Dallas attractions, except the Kimball and Botanical Gardens, those are top notch. The rest of FTW is essentially the embodiment of the phrase “all hat no cattle”. The best BBQ in the state is also in Lockhart, TX. No north Texas BBQ comes close to central Texas BBQ. Kreuz’s, Smitty’s, and Blacks are what you want for BBQ.

      Time will tell. Nobody thought (including Colorado fans) you could rebuild a team in 1 year. After TCU win… Deion and Colorado fans were understandably amped up. But with 4 wins he exceeded Vegas and most media talking head predictions. Now he has a year with core unit, brought in 41 guys to right offensive and defensive lines. New offensive line coach, new defensive coach. End of the day, talent is better this year. Deion’s do you believe was really to the people that said they were gonna get smoked by TCU and that they’d be lucky to win one game all year. Watch, they’ll win 7 at least.

      @@solidverbal everyone should be skeptical… but they got better in the December and Spring portal. They lost 6 games by a score of less in a PAC12 that was better than this year’s BIG12. Deion’s first year is better than Jedd Fisch’s first year at Arizona after both took over really, really bad teams. Buffs will win 7 (which again will be better than Fisch’s 2nd year with Wildcats) this year and if they win more (bonus) it would be an incredible turnaround. Deion has shown he can recruit Prep and each year he’ll rely less on the portal. I’m not sure why you think Deion is dependent on the portal, he just assessed the hand that was given to him and chose the fastest direction to fill an empty pantry. I don’t think people (I’m no talking about the SV here) but

    How do you go this whole episode without mentioning a team that literally received the death penalty by no fault of their own. Oregon State lost their alumni head coach, entire offensive coaching staff, both top 25 QBs, half their top 10 O Line, numerous top players across the defense, their fan favorite RB, and oh yeah, their entire conference from a team that was in the top 10 last year. You can’t name another program that has lost more and hurt more than us the past year

  • @Tijuanabill

    I think both things can be true that the expanded playoff is unnecessary, and that it's better for the sport. Think of how many fanbases can say things like, "We were xyz away from making the playoff last year." Instead of knowing that 9-3 season will never be enough, now it's borderline success, and something to build off of.

    • @solidverbal
      @solidverbal 2 дні тому

      All valid, but doesn't that just arbitrarily water down what a "great" season is? Taking advantage of a lower standard just feels like artificial success, at least in some instances. The context of a team's season matters, but how often do we consider, even knowing opinions vary a ton, a 9-3 team among the country's best?

    • @Tijuanabill
      @Tijuanabill День тому

      @@solidverbal We don't consider 9-3 to be among the best. But a fanbase might see that as more success than before, because it's getting them closer to the playoff than before. It keeps fans engaged later in the season. Also, winning a natty will now just mean more, because pretty much every team will have defeated more quality opponents, than ever before, just to win the tournament.

    • @Tijuanabill
      @Tijuanabill 2 дні тому

      The SEC has the same reputation for ball control running offenses that the Big 10 has. That has changed a bit in recent years, but you said your whole life so, I'm curious what you think has been different between the two conferences, and their style of play?

    • @solidverbal
      @solidverbal 2 дні тому

      @@Tijuanabill It seems more coaches in the SEC have embraced more open offenses in recent years, especially among the top group of teams each year. Couple that with, it seems, finding and developing more dynamic QBs, and it makes for a better TV product. Outside of Ohio State and a handcuffed JJ McCarthy, what are the big Big Ten QB highlights of the last few years? Sean Clifford? Talia? The conference has been a high level QB desert. The SEC has boasted two LSU Heisman QBs, a run of Bama Heisman-level guys, Anthony Richardson, Carson Beck (may be top 5 pick in 2025), Hendon Hooker, KJ Jefferson (before injuries), Kyle Trask, Chad Kelly/Matt Corral. The Big Ten adding the west coast teams is for sure going to be an infusion of QB talent/recruiting/development, and it's much needed.

    • @jamessaibot5681
      @jamessaibot5681 2 дні тому

      @Tijuanabill it's not the style of play it's the match-ups. Lsu vs Auburn is more palatable than say, Minnesota vs Purdue. Several good rivalries besides the one big Ohio state vs Michigan. It's just a deep conference with more Sunday players than other conferences.

    • @Tijuanabill
      @Tijuanabill День тому

      @@solidverbal But SEC fans told us all how great that style of football was. They told us LSU vs Bama with less touchdowns than the moon surface, is great football to spectate. Both the SEC and the Big 10 are known historically for snooze ball, despite recent changes in outlook. Now they are saying what we were saying all along, so it's hard to really take them seriously.

    • @solidverbal
      @solidverbal День тому

      @@Tijuanabill Watch what the teams and coaches do (or don't do), not what fans or media defenders say. Actions over words. The people who actually had the ability to make SEC teams more dynamic did so. Big Ten coaches and programs have not succeeded in the same way. Nick Saban hired Lane Kiffin because he knew he needed to adapt and upgrade, AND hired the right guy to jumpstart that process.

    I thought you guys were pretty spot on. Additionally, I would like to add two comments. First, TCU. Their problem was lack of depth. First round they play ever well against Michigan but got beat up and there was no recovery against a well stocked Georgia team. The second is with the extended playoff and how difficult each game of the season will now be, many teams that are lacking depth will be beat up whereas the teams with byes. This will become a serious issue

    Regarding your James Franklin comments, how long did it take Joe Paterno to win a national championship? 20 years give or take a year. Why did Franklin take 5 years to get an offensive line. Remember the sanctions, O'Brien opted not to sign offensive lineman. OL is becoming a strength. Franklin made a good hire. We need to prove we can develop a QB. Yurchich didn't do it. Every year I look at the best records and guess what, 10-2 ranks pretty high. Find a way to support a coach doing a good job. We are close. We need a good QB recruit to become a top college QB. By the way Hackenberg lived in Tamaqua during his early years. That's why he is a Pennsylvanian.

With few exceptions if a city didn’t have a Major League baseball team by 1980 then said city likely won’t be able to support a MLB franchise. Seems to me a similar situation with the Big12 (ie. if a team needs a private equity infusion to compete with the big dogs, then it probably shouldn’t be trying to compete with the big dogs (Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia; Alabama, Texas, etc.)🤷‍♂️
